![]() ![]() There is, however, a very interesting interview with Anderson and writer Allan Cubitt in last week’s Radio Times in which Cubitt seems to admit that the camera “lingered too intimately” on the victims. I’m also not sure I consider the staging of the murder scenes as necessarily problematic: a perceptive viewer would understand their “beauty” was unreal something invented by Spector to justify his actions as art, rather than merely grim and violent death. But I’d argue that the contradictions of Spector are, along with Gillian Anderson’s sublime performance, one of the things that makes The Fall interesting: how even people we might read as “good” can indeed fall. There were some questions to answer there – the general issue of crime drama presenting female death as entertainment is made no less knotty by a quality production. And then there was the question of Katie: 15, sexually aware, her schoolgirl obsession with Spector mirroring the killer’s obsession with the women he later strangles. There were discussions around whether it glamorised sexual violence against women through its nuanced portrayal of Paul – a highly intelligent man with a tough beginning, who seemingly loves his children and tries to help others through grief – and the art-directed gloss of his murder scenes. #The fall guy season 1 episode 1 serialThere was a great deal of controversy around The Fall when it first aired, and the depiction of the serial murderer at the heart of its story and the women he killed. I remain fascinated by John Lynch’s performance as the police boss, and the way he manages to convey that complicated mix of intense awkwardness, self-hate, attraction and hierarchy. (And brilliantly contrasted with her absolute cool when faced with gang afterwards. ![]() Gibson, meanwhile, is wandering around empty houses on her own, in the dark her reaction to Jim suddenly appearing in the mirror behind her possibly the most animated response we’ve seen to date. ![]() The investigation has not moved forward, and Spector is holed up in a double-fronted waterside Victorian house somewhere in Scotland where desirable property is presumably cheap and readily available. He called to tell her it was over: DSI Gibson could only protest that it would never stop until she caught him. Finally we had contact between Paul Spector and Stella Gibson – but only by phone, and only at Spector’s instigation. T he season one finale of The Fall made no attempt at all to bring the series to a satisfying close. ![]()
